When the Khmer Rouge took control of Cambodia in 1975, it embarked on a campaign of systematic slaughter of people deemed opposed – or inconvenient – to the new order it aimed to impose. In the heart of Phnom Penh, a school was repurposed as a waystation on the road to the Killing Fields. It was called S21.
